CHAPTER ELEVEN

Forrest

“How’s everybody doing here tonight?” Leland yells into the microphone as the walls of the bar rattle from the crowd’s applause.

My gaze drifts over to Shauna for the thousandth time since I had to leave her to set up for our performance, mesmerized by how stunning she looks in that dress. But her smile is the real star of the show—bright, larger than life, and natural—everything about that woman that I missed.

“I sure hope we have some country fans in the audience,” Leland continues as the crowd agrees. “Awesome. So let’s start with a little George Strait then, yeah?” The crowd goes wild as I begin to play the introduction to “Check Yes or No.” Every other night, I use the music to block out my thoughts. But tonight, they’re focused on one thing only: Shauna.

Like I told her in the car, I was nervous to have her here because I wasn’t sure how I was going to respond. The skintight dress she’s wearing obviously didn’t help my dick from reacting, even though he always gets excited when she’s near. But music helped me move on, move forward, all those years ago. Now the question is: Can I let it do the same for both of us this time?

I think that’s why I wanted her here, to share a part of me with her that no one else knows about. It’s what friends would do, but the more I spend time with her and talk to her, the more we address our past, the more I know deep down I could never just be friends with this girl.

The song ends, and we jump right into the next one, “It’s a Great Day to Be Alive” by Travis Tritt.

Every now and then, I cast my eyes over to watch Shauna singing along to the songs we’re playing and sipping on her whiskey and coke. Initially, she said she wasn’t going to have a drink tonight, but I encouraged her to since I would be driving us home later. Part of me just wanted her to relax after that conversation we had in the truck earlier.

I knew we’d have to address it eventually, so when that song came on, the one that reminded her of her dad, I couldn’t miss the opportunity to bite the bullet and get it over with. Listening to her talk about how that whole thing went down with her parents made me realize how selfish I was being back then. Of course, if she had been honest with me from the get-go, it would have been easier to understand. But I also don’t know that I would have at that age. The only thing that mattered to me at the time was her.

But there’s one thing she said that stood out the most: that she didn’t regret her choice because it gave her that time with her dad. And as I told her in the truck, I know I would have done the same thing if the situation were reversed.
